Canada’s Obstreperous Southern Neighbor

During the bicentennial of the War of 1812, Postmedia News published the article from which I quote the following excerpts:

War of 1812: Canadian identity developed in the crucible of combat.

The bicentennial highlights a period of tremendous significance for Canadians.

… Before the war, “none of the people in these British colonies felt any sort of affinity for anyone from the other British provinces,” said Ron Dale, Parks Canada’s War of 1812 bicentennial manager. The American destruction of life and property — resisted equally by settlers, British troops and native warriors — bound them together into a new group who began thinking of themselves as Canadians. “Having faced a common enemy, it gave them a common feeling that they had all suffered under similar circumstances,” Mr. Dale said.”

After the treaty of Ghent (December 24, 1814) ended the war of 1812, Canadians were kind enough to treat that war as a mere spat between siblings, and relations with its rambunctious neighbor to the south became cordial -- until 2024 when the ignorant dotard, Donald Trump, was elected President of the United States. The fact that Donald, the sociopath, is trying to coerce Canada into becoming part of the United states is one more example of how stupid he is. Canadians are justifiably proud of their nation and do not want to give up their independence to anyone. Furthermore, as they demonstrated during the war of 1812, they will fight to defend their country.

During an interview on MSNBC, Anthony Scaramucci said of Trump: “… I think he’s an 18th century Prussian. So, he’s a colonialist. He wants to take over Canada and Greenland and the Panama Canal.”  I have a slightly different take on it.  As Mark Twain said, “Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.” Not only does Trump not know history, he is too stupid to realize that we can and should learn from it.  Someone, presumably not a historian, probably told Trump that the presidents we call great are the ones who expanded our borders or conqured new territories.  Now Trump believes conquering other nations, even if they are our allies, will make him great -- so great. He dreams of saying, “No one has ever expanded the United states as much as I have.” The truth is that he is threatening our friends and allies while ignoring the very real threat Putin poses to the entire world! There is no other word for it, Trump is insane.
